In Elevate Drama classes students will be introduced to or strengthened in the knowledge of the stage. They will learn stage directions, blocking, projection, self control, character development, and confidence.

They will explore different mediums in stage performance through both humorous and serious subject matters. In each class the students will work on humorous skits and also human videos. They will have the opportunity to write and to perform a short monologue. These shorter pieces will be put together with all of the Elevate Classes in a Finale performance at the end of the class session.

Contemporary Dance • Celia Thurman

Strength and passion!!! We will explore movement qualities through the combination of several modern techniques as well as free improvisation. We will be learning dance compositions and have freedom to create our own choreography. We will work towards proficiency in several forms of modern dance technique as well as conditioning and flexibility. A performance opportunity will culminate the class. Please bring your bare feet, socks, comfortable clothes that you can move in/roll on the floor in, and WATER!!!

This lab will explore the world of art through the medium of paper. Projects will include origami, paper cutting, bead making, masks and other sculptures. Small supply fee.

Hip Hop • Celia Thurman REGISTRATION CLOSED

Sweat and fun!!! We will work towards proficiency in the following areas: movement isolations, movement quality and cognitive recall of dance movements, musicality, conditioning, flexibility, and physical stamina. A performance opportunity will culminate the class. Please bring tennis shoes, comfortable clothes that you can move in, and WATER!!!

This class gives students the opportunity to learn and perform famous dance choreography from six Broadway musicals. The primary aim of the class is to give students a broad understanding of various broadway styles and allow students to choreograph one group musical act of their own to a pop culture song. Students will also learn staging, developing character through movement, basic dance terminology, facial expressions, musicality, syncopation, and synergy. Some dance or movement experience will be helpful.

Poetry • Emily Peniston REGISTRATION CLOSED
Tuesday 10:00am | 5th Grade & up
This course will explore basic poetry terms and concepts. Students will learn to analyze and understand poetry, and to create their own formal and free verse poems. We will look into scansion and the art of poetry readings. At the end of the session the students will have the opportunity to deliver an original poem at the Elevate Finale.

Grammar/Creative Writing • Emily Peniston

This course will teach grammar and language rules under the umbrella of fun creative writing exercises and journaling techniques. We will create fiction, non-fiction, and maybe even some poetry pieces. Students will have the opportunity to deliver an original piece of writing at the Elevate Finale.

Spaceship Earth • Melissa Wilson

Extraterrestrial beings have spotted a blue planet full of life. Curious about it’s distinct life-giving properties they have landed seeking answers about this unique planet. Join them on this Earth adventure as they learn about the biosphere, energy, water properties, soil and landforms, rocks and minerals, plant growth and adaptations, animal behavior and adaptations, weather and climate, ecosystems, and Earth’s moon and surrounding planets.

This hour long lab connects to the Standard Course of Study for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade and integrates hands-on experiments that your student will be sure to come home gabbing about. Following lab students will be given a suggested reading list of picture books (you can grab at the library) for the next class and an at home experiment/project they can do that week to further their studies.

REAL Science • Melissa Wilson

Today in mass media we here of cloning, global warming, super-bugs, and the rain forest being torn down…yet what does that all mean to us? Nothing; if we do not have the scientific understanding to grasp the topics presented before us in the media. This middle school science lab will unpack current science issues in popular to media from various perspectives in order to introduce greater scientific concepts of cells, atmosphere, ecosystems, anatomy, and earth science.

This hour and half long lab connects to the Standard Course of Study for 6th, 7th and 8th grade and integrates hands-on experiments that your student will be sure to come home gabbing about. Following lab students will be given a suggested reading list of science books (you can grab at the library) and an at home experiment/project they can do that week to further their studies.

Due to the hands-on nature of the science lab it is important that each participant follows all safety procedures and comes to lab ready to participate respectfully. As well, lab tutorials require a $15 material fee.

Newberry Book Club• Melissa Wilson REGISTRATION CLOSED

(for 4th graders -8th graders at a proficient reading level of U, V, or W)
We all love a good story. But a story always gets sweeter when we share it among friends. Join our club as we explore three fabulous Newberry books by three fabulous authors. As we read we will also have lively discussions where we learn to identify themes, analyze vocabulary, recognize the author’s craft, and respond meaningfully to the text.
