How will I find out if my Elevate class is cancelled due to weather?
Elevate will follow the Asheville City Schools for weather cancellations. Cancellations will be posted on our website, WLOS, and sent via email. Teachers have the option to do something different for their class. For example, if city schools are still in session, but a teacher lives in the county and it is unsafe for them to drive they may cancel class. Or, if classes are cancelled, but the roads cleared up later in the day and the teacher would prefer to meet, they may do so. If a teacher decides to do something different then they must contact Elevate staff and their students. If a student doesn’t hear anything from their teachers then they can assume that whatever is on the Elevate website applies to them.
If classes are cancelled due to weather. The teacher will arrange a make up class for up to two classes. Anything beyond that will be considered an act of God and beyond our control..
What’s the difference between Tutorials, Enrichment, and Arts Academy?
Homeschool Tutorials are classes for preschool thru high school that take place before 4 pm. These classes run from August to May and are two-16 week semesters. Tuesdays are PreK-6th grade, Wednesdays are 6th-12th grade and Thursdays are PreK- 12th grade. Be sure to check out our whole schedule as Elevate has some great electives after 4 pm for preschool thru adult that are not offered during our homeschool hours.
Enrichment Classes are our “try it” classes. These classes offer a fun way to try out a new activity and learn new skills. We have class offering for preschool all the way through adults. Most classes last 12 weeks.
Arts Academy are our “build it” classes. These classes are for those who are ready to take an art form more seriously and build on a certain skill. These classes are two-16 week semesters.
What is Elevate’s history?
Elevate began in the fall of 2009 after the Highland Acting Company’s production of Godspell. Nearly 100 artists volunteered their talents and time to create that production and I sensed that we could give more to the city of Asheville. I was compelled to ask the artists of the Highland Acting Company to also teach really affordable classes after school, to lower the “fruit” of the branch within reach of many who had never “tasted” it, the children and adults who have been waiting “outside the room” they always wished they could be in. We began with 9 after school classes in the back of Garage 34 on 34 South Lexington. Elevate invited people to try things they had never tried before. We grew into a wonderful community of teachers from throughout the city and an amazing group of students who truly LOVE to learn. Elevate is a very special place. Many students have said they just came to take a class and ended up finding community. Courage can be at home at Elevate, because we are all learning. –Sherri McCready (founder)
Do I have to share your faith to participate in your programs?
No- it is not required to share our faith for you to participate in our classes. We intend and hope for our programs to be a blessing to all people in Asheville who want it. In full disclosure, all of our teachers consider themselves “Christ-followers” and they are allowed to talk about their relationship with Jesus if it comes up. We will be as up front as possible about any Christian ideas that may be covered in the class so you can choose if it’s the right fit for you.
Elevate is all about freeing people to be themselves. We would be hypocritical if we didn’t allow the same freedom for our teachers. Our teachers are free to be who they are. How that plays out varies as much as our teachers. If you have any questions about a specific class, ask us. Our teachers will be glad to answer your questions. This is not a trick or a gimmick. We simply believe that God is loving, generous, creative, and beautiful. So, we want to demonstrate the same qualities through Elevate.
Do you have scholarships?
While we try to keep our prices as low as possible, we know that it still may not be affordable for some. We do not currently have a scholarship program. However, we are occasionally able to offer some assistance towards classes via bartering or donations. For more information, contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
How can I support Elevate?
Our tuition does not cover all of our expenses and if you love what we’re doing, we would love to have your support to help make it possible! You can donate to our scholarship fund online or in person. You could also volunteer with fundraising, advertising, or helping with various other projects or could consider teaching a class.
