An Asheville native, Celia began studying dance at the age of conception. After graduating from Appalachian State University with degrees in Dance, Art, and Design, she began her professional performing experience with X Factor, a contemporary dance company based in Boone, NC, touring that season with the North Carolina Dance Festival. In 2008 Celia went on to study with The American Dance festival, held at Duke University, and concentrating on Cunningham technique (Modern), and Contemporary with West-African influence. Returning to WNC, Celia reunited with Alisha Ear and two other accomplished dancers for a project-based summer creative entitled ACTS dancers, and performed locally in 2009. And then it began: “Sherri McCready approached me to instruct her daughter in private ballet lessons. And from there, the Elevate Dance Program started taking root.” And in 2013, Celia founded ALIAS International Dance Theatre. Thanks to: Melissa Wilson for visioning and founding the Dance Apprenticeship; to Levi Sowerby for great faith in small-beginnings, through teaching and creative investment; to Alisha Ear for constant encouragement; and to Sherri McCready for her faith-filled leadership and encouragement.
